Everything is wrapped up in an impressive visual package that really sets Mini Motor Racing apart. Crazy hairpin bends and trackside obstacles are the order of the day, and each raceway has its own twee soundtrack.Ĭareer mode is the heart of the experience, and features a frankly mesmerising number of races and championships. The tracks are a mixed bunch, with tarmac, dirt roads, and a combination of the two standing between you and victory. The game controls your acceleration, leaving steering and nitro boosts down to you.

You guide your cutesy car around a series of circuits from a top-down perspective, collecting prize money for winning races and spending the cash on upgrades. Mini Motor Racing is very much in the Micro Machines mould. It's simply a suggestion that game developers have a moral duty not to make poor arcade-style racing games. That's not to say that Mini Motor Racing is a danger to human life, or to advocate leaping into your 1.0 hatchback to try and do some awesome jumps. Of course, if the games in question aren't done well, we might once again be tempted to recklessly endanger our lives in the pursuit of automotive glory. That's why we have video games, so we can do things that would otherwise lead to our hospitalisation or incarceration by tapping a few buttons. Seriously, go out and try it - you'll probably crash into a tree or something. There’s even 4-player online multiplayer and campaign coop.Pulling off a power slide in real life is hideously difficult. While there are a handful of well-designed racing titles available on the standalone headset, none match the level of depth offered by The Binary Mills addictive experience. If you switch from first-person to third-person while holding onto the steering wheel, you can actually bring it with you outside the vehicle, though I wouldn’t recommend it.ĭon’t let the cartoon vehicles and isometric visuals fool you, however Mini Motor Racing X offers a rich VR racing experience unlike anything available on the Oculus Quest at the moment. Whereas the in-car view has you driving your vehicle via a conventional wheel, third-person allows you to control the action with a single hand as if operating an old-school slot car. Here you can view the action from a top-down perspective, teleport to various positions around each track, or fix yourself above your vehicle. Career Mode lets you unlock additional vehicles by competing in hundreds of races across 50+ tracks ranging from tropical resorts and alpine trails to archeological dig sites and ancient tropical ruins.įor an entirely different perspective all-together, hold down your right analog stick to enter third-person mode. It is here you can also cycle through the various game modes. Something about cycling through vehicles using the automatic lift and viewing the racetrack outside feels oddly therapeutic. The garage is actually one of my favorite parts of Mini Motor Racing X.

You can also change your appearance, upgrade your ride, and perform a variety of other customizations. It is here you can select from a wide variety of vehicles, each featuring their own unique stats. Players begin their racing career within their own personal garage. Whether it be the massive selection of eclectic racetracks and environments, in-depth vehicle customization, colorful isometric visuals, or numerous game modes, there appears to be something for everyone in this surprisingly rich racing experience. Originally released back in 2011 on iOS and Android, Mini Motor Racing X has finally made its way to the Oculus Quest, offering what could easily be considered the most satisfying VR racing experience available on the standalone headset at the moment. Mario Kart meets Rocket League in this bite-sized arcade racer.
